This coverage contains arcs that represent the streams in Iowa that have been designated other than General Class. This coverage was developed from USEPA's River Reach 3 files. Graphic elements for this coverage are from 1:100,000 scale digital line graphs (DLG) files from the USGS. Rivers were originally subdivided by river basin but the designated streams were selected from the basin coverages and appended into the IAWBSCL coverage. The designated streams arcs were then unsplit where possible to create DESIGRIV, a PC ARC/INFO coverage. It was then converted to a shapefile.
This digital, geographically referenced data set was developed by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources to carry out agency responsibilities related to management, protection, and development of Iowa's natural resources.
The stream use designations are in the process of being updated by the Iowa DNR. This version of the designations is current with the redesignation which was approved in May, 2004. The older use designations have been removed from this coverage. For a complete description of the stream use designations see Chapter 61, Water Quality Standards of the Iowa Administrative Code.

The development of the coverages in the NRGIS Library represents a major investment of staff time and effort. As a professional responsibility, the the Iowa DNR expects to receive proper credit when these GIS coverages are utilized. The Department also expects that the original documentation will remain with any redistribution of these coverages.

The positional accuracy of the coverage coordinates is a deductive estimate based on possible errors that may have occurred during each production step. These errors include source of data, digitization, and processing. The accuracy is estimated to be 52 meters using a root-sum-square error calculation.
RF3 data files were supplied in ARC/INFO format. The designated streams were selected from the basin coverages and appended into a state-wide coverage called IAWBSCL. Since then stream segments have been added or deleated as needed to make the current version.
